traditional English hospitality
Tucked away in the picturesque village of Braughing, Hertfordshire, The Brown Bear is a Grade II listed country pub steeped in centuries of history and character. Believed to date back to the 13th century, this charming inn has been at the heart of village life for generations — a place where vistors, locals and friends gather to share good food, great company, and a warm welcome.
Step inside and you’ll find low timbered ceilings, open fires, and exposed beams, all lovingly preserved to retain the pub’s original charm. The atmosphere is cosy and inviting — a true reflection of traditional English hospitality, where the past and present blend seamlessly.
Now under new ownership as of late 2025, The Brown Bear enters an exciting new chapter. While we’re proud to honour its rich heritage, we’re also passionate about breathing fresh life into the pub with seasonally inspired menus, locally sourced ingredients, and a thoughtfully curated selection of ales, wines, and spirits.
Whether you’re joining us for a relaxed pint by the fire, a hearty Sunday roast, or a special celebration in our dining room, we aim to make every visit memorable. Dogs and friendly conversation are always welcome.
Come and discover why The Brown Bear has been a cherished part of Braughing’s story for over 700 years — and why we’re so excited for the future.
